Score 93/100 · William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jan 2019

The 2016 Echezeaux Grand Cru exhibits aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, grilled squab, Asian spices and a subtle framing of toasty new oak, followed by a full-bodied, ample and expansive palate with a nicely layered, concentrated core, juicy acids and fine structuring tannins. Fifty percent of the crop was lost to spring frosts, so it's no surprise that the wine is deeper and more intense than the 2017 rendition.

Ten rather than 15 barrels (four new) from 40-year-old vines in Les Loächausses. Bottom part of the slope frozen terribly but the top was fine. Tank sample. Mid ruby. Very sweet, round and full. Really very lovely. Hugely attractive. Mid weight of ripe fruit with good freshness on the end. Fine tannins. Very long. Already alluring! Hint of violets. An early maturer. (JR)
