Score 94/100 · Drink 2021-2030, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2021

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep, dark ruby color in the glass. Its mature yet glorious bouquet alone is intoxicating, blending ripe strawberries with a mix of savory and sweet spices, tomato leaf, hints of air-dried meats and golden curry. This is silky in texture and elegant, ushering in cool-toned red fruits, further propelled by salty minerals and nervous acidity under an air of inner rose. There’s still a tug of residual tannins here, just enough to frame the finish perfectly, as the 2001 tapers off remarkably fresh to hints of plum and licorice. This is a testament to the traditional Baricci style and the Montosoli hill from which this wine was made. It’s stunning.
