Bright ruby-red. Black cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate and menthol on the aromatic nose. Softer and lusher in style than the comparatively dense and more primary 2004, with flavors of dark raspberry, licorice and dark chocolate. Nicely supple merlot, with harmonious acidity and slightly elevated tannins.

The 2003 Merlot is one of the top three or four Merlots in California. A huge nose of melted chocolate, roasted coffee, black cherry, and charcoal jumps from the glass of this full-bodied, opulent, sexy Merlot. It is a delicious, savory, heady wine to drink over the next 7-8 years. (Release date 2/06) Tel. (707) 255-2321; Fax (707) 255-6786

(includes 25% cabernet sauvignon) Full ruby. Tarry aromas of blackberry, licorice pastille and menthol. Dense but juicy, with medicinal flavors of blue and black fruits, menthol, mint and licorice. Not especially sweet or fleshy, but avoids obvious flavors of dehydration. Still, this could use a bit more vibrancy. Finishes with substantial, building tannins. The team had to pick more of the blocks early due to the heat in 2003, noted winemaker Green.
