The dark colored 1997 Clos Vougeot, a vineyard that was particularly successful in this vintage, reveals candied red fruit and a myriad of spices in its aromatics. This over-ripe, massively dense, yet fresh and exceptionally well-structured wine is crammed with layer after layer of red and black compote-like fruit. Loads of supple yet present tannins provide this blockbuster with the backbone for moderate to long-term aging. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2012+. Deep bright red-ruby. Kirsch nose hints at surmaturite. Fat entry, then firm and backward in the middle palate, in need of some sweetening. Black fruit, licorice and menthol flavors seem more akin to those of 1996. But this is obviously very ripe.

Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent négociant house in Burgundy. It has managed to straddle both the entry-level and fine wine market, while retaining respect in both.
