Limpid gold. Vibrant, mineral-accented scents of Meyer lemon, pear skin and white flowers, with a floral nuance emerging with aeration. Juicy, sharply focused citrus and orchard fruit flavors show very good clarity and become deeper with air. The mineral and floral qualities come back steadily on the penetrating finish, which lingers with very good tenacity. I suspect that this deceptively concentrated wine will age relatively slowly thanks to its taut, racy character.

More complex than the Pontcin cuvée, yet with a similar level of purity and freshness, the 2011 Château Grillet offers lots of crushed rock-like minerality, buttered citrus, tangerine and a hint of honeysuckle on the nose. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, has vibrant acidity, plenty of concentration and a great finish. It's another wine that will easily continue drinking nicely through at least 2021.

They won’t bottle this for another few months at least. Earlier picked than recent Château-Grillet I have tasted. Leaner, but is it better? There are certainly minerals and refinement. But for the moment it seems pretty tight and uncompromising. (JR)
