Full medium ruby. A bit cooler on the nose than the other '09s I tasted from Chimney Rock, with its dark fruit aromas joined by a cola note and an element of graphite minerality. Then ripe, sweet and deep on the palate, showing excellent concentration and framing acidity to its flavors of dark fruits, chocolate, minerals and spices; a note of licorice pastille emerged with air. Finishes firmly tannic, spicy and long, with the spine for continued development in bottle. A very good lineup from Chimney Rock, as these wines avoid the green notes of the '08s.

Chimney Rock's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Ganymede Vineyard is huge. Black cherries, plums, spices, herbs and pencil shavings all explode from the glass in this large-scaled, voluptuous wine. Though a bit wild at the outset, the Ganymede finds a more finessed, refined level of expression with time in the glass. There is plenty of personality and sheer character in this powerful, deep Cabernet Sauvignon.
