More knitted down than the 2005, in the 2002, 2004 vein, with firm tannins, even if they are now melted and integrated, and a sense of control. Dark berry fruits with smoked earth, undergrowth, soot, powerful but subdued, great quality. Slate texture to the tannins, suggesting there are a few more years before this is fully rounded out. This was tasted out of magnum. 55% new oak, Eric Boissenot consultant.

Tasted at the château, the 2006 Château Saint-Pierre has a ripe blackberry, kirsch, cedar and liquorice-scented bouquet that feels as if it is approaching its drinking plateau. The palate is sweet on the entry with liquorice-tinged black fruit, slightly rustic tannins, quite spicy and peppery towards the finish. There is impressive body to this Saint-Pierre, even though it does not possess the precision that more recent vintages have displayed. Tasted April 2016.

Tasted blind. Very healthy graduated colour. Minty and lifted. Thick and glamorous. Poyferré? A tad chunky. Bit too heavy. (JR)
