This was a challenging vintage for reds (great for Sauternes if you were wondering), but there is still plenty of life and lift in this lovely bottle. Cigar box, soft raspberries, old books, tobacco, classic old claret, you can't help but feel just how few places in the world can deliver this sense of unhurried, languid pleasure in a 56 year old wine.

Calon-Segur made one of the best 1967s, which for several years outperformed its more heralded older sibling, the 1966. Rich, soft, supple, and deeply fruity, the wine had a voluptuous texture. The bouquet offered ripe fruit and good cedary scents. The fruit has now begun to fade so immediate consumption is advised. Anticipated maturity: Now-may be in decline. Last tasted, 10/80.

Wedding gift lists traditionally include wine glasses or cutlery, but in 1718, Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, the owner of Château Lafite and Château Latour and president of the Bordeaux parliament, received a rather more impressive present: Château Calon.
