I have only encountered the 1967 La Mission Haut-Brion on one occasion, when it surprised me and others by performing above the reputation of the growing season. The nose is quite gamy, almost Rhône-like (perhaps a touch of brettanomyces?), but I find it oddly pleasing since it maintains reasonable delineation. It’s also gamy on the palate, and it delivers satisfying levels of black fruit on the simple finish. Not a long-term prospect given the impeccable provenance of this ex-château bottle, but maybe large formats could be holding up. Tasted at the La Mission Haut-Brion vertical in London.

Very pale ruby with a brick rim. Mushrooms and a hint of port on the nose. Dry finish – not dead! But pretty dry on the finish. (JR)
In the early seventies the 1967 La Mission-Haut-Brion was one of the top eight or ten wines of this vintage from the Medoc and Graves. It has begun to lose its fruit, and has a coarse, chewy texture with some tough tannins that seem to be taking over the personality of the wine. There is still some fruit, and the wine has appeal, but I would suggest drinking it up immediately. Anticipated maturity: Now
