One of the many delights of this vertical was the 1982 Rouge. Prominent cassis, tobacco, dried lavender and earthy elements are front and center. Concentrated and sexy, the 1982 is a thrilling Mas de Daumas Gassac. Polished tannins and a bright, acidic core hold it together and pave the way to a long and savory conclusion.

73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.1% Merlot, 3.3% Cabernet Franc, 6.7% Tannat, 4.1% Malbec, 4.8% Syrah, 1% rare varieties. TA 3.30  g/l (sulphuric) , pH 3.60. Black cherry, dry tannins, somewhat hard texture. Lacking the creaminess and fruit of its youth. (RH)

Very good colour, but definitely more ageing brick at the rim than the 1978-81 vintages. Round, rich, mellow. There are animal aromas and the wine is more Rhône in style than Bordeaux: lots of ripe fruit, then the tannins kick in, rather furry again. Still very tannic and flavoursome. A big, alcoholic wine. Not subtle. [This was possibly a poor bottle, as I have heard others raving about this vintage.] (JR)
