The 1989 Rouge is a fabulous wine. Deep, rich and powerful, the 1989 has aged so well. All the elements are so impeccably balanced. Black cherry, leather, spice, menthol and licorice are some of the notes that develop with a bit of air. The 1989 possesses remarkable depth for a wine of its age. It would be a shame to miss it at this stage, so I would not take too many chances on extended cellaring.

66.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 1.8% Cabernet Franc, 1.7% Tannat, 7% Malbec, 1.6% Pinot Noir, 14% Syrah, 1% rare varieties. TA 3.80  g/l (sulphuric) , pH 3.60. Curious scent – almost like pine. Black cherry, blackberry – still very youthful. Wonderfully unconventional. Tender tannic furriness. Some attractive bitterness to finish. Doesn’t betray its ingredients or origin at all! Quite distinctive. (RH)

20% Viognier, 40% Chardonnay, 25% Petit Manseng, 5% Roussanne/Marsanne. Proper deep gold colour. The simplest vintage of all (because of the high percentage of oaked Chardonnay?). Green again, but sweetish. Quite simple. (JR)
