The Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux, which had a 26-day cuvaison, is made from 35-year-old vines. Jayer thinks it could well be his longest-lived 1986, lasting "25 years." It is still quite tannic, but reveals intense fruit, none of the watery mid-ranges found in lesser 1986s, excellent length and richness, and surprising size and girth for a 1986. Anyone who loves or makes Pinot Noir should study Jayer's wines, for they serve as a modern-day reference point for those desiring to produce the best possible wines from this fickle grape variety.

Henri Jayer

The wines of Henri Jayer (1922-2006) have mythical status in Burgundy. Coveted by many but tasted by just a precious few, they are some of the region’s rarest and most desirable – considered by some to be the pinnacle of what can be achieved with Pinot Noir.
