Drink 0-0, Neal Martin, Dec 2023

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a strange nose of blackcurrant pastilles and blueberry, almost as if there was some carbonic maceration going on. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins—fleshy in terms of mouthfeel, but missing nervosité and the energy of the superior Lavaux wines this vintage. I am not convinced that this is a representative bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

A high point of the range in this vintage is the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a medium to full-bodied, ample and perfumed wine evocative of sweet berry fruit and plums mingled with rose petals, peonies, orange rind and warm spices. Layered and seamless, with melting tannins and a succulent core of fruit, it concludes with a long, saline finish.
