All of the 'young vines' from vineyards that the Turley team farms (this can range from 22 to 28 vineyards). The young vines are picked separately from the old vines and each vineyard is fermented separately. This wine has fruit from 12 counties with an average vine age of 20 years. Aged 11 months in barrel. Medium purple in colour. Bright and brambly with a soft greenness like angelica leaf and a kiss of kerosene pungency on the nose. Walloping impact on the palate with fresh acidity that vibrates through the finish. Develops notes of dried earth, garrigue, chilli and char. (SCJ)

The 2022 Zinfandel Juvenile is a remarkably expressive and over-performing iteration of this wine, composed of young vines from nearly three dozen sites across California. The nose combines sweet red fruits, roasted plums and leather with autumnal, spice-driven accents. The palate is medium-bodied with detailed layers of easygoing, succulent fruits. The finish is welcomely dustier and more structured than the nose and palate would suggest and concludes with a bright spine of quenching acidity.

Whole-cluster pressed into stainless steel and then aged in used oak barriques. Pale orangey pink. Aromas of watermelon and strawberries. Silky flavours of watermelon, strawberry and guava have a delicate brightness, with acidity slightly softer than I would like. The flavours, though, are compelling, and there's just a certain amount of delight to be had in a well-made dry rosé of Zinfandel from California after so much sweetish White Zinfandel. (AY)
