The 2005 Barolo Giachini is dark, sensual and inviting. Black cherry, graphite, game, chocolate, smoke, licorice and dark spices meld into the powerful finish. This is an especially brooding Giachini, with all of its elements in the right place. Today, the Giachini shows a bit better balance than it did as a young wine.

Full, deep red. Sexy, high-toned aromas of plum, brown spices, marzipan and chocolatey oak; lifted by a note of cinnamon. Juicy, intense and penetrating but a bit youthfully imploded. Can't match the Arborina for early texture or flesh but this tactile, juicy wine boasts strong soil tones of minerals and brown spices and finishes with firm tannic spine and excellent lift.

Dark smudgy crimson. Relatively rich on the nose – a sort of sheen to it. But it fades a little fast. (JR)

The 2005 Barolo Vigna Giachini shows plenty of intensity in its red fruit, smoke, tar and French oak. The wine reveals excellent persistence, depth and definition. This is one of the more oaky wines in the lineup, and with a more moderate approach more vineyard and varietal character might show through.
