Score 90-92/100 · Drink 2001-2007, Robert Parker, Jan 2000

The 1998 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is tight and backward. Always the last to be harvested (because of the extremely cool micro-climate), the 1998 possesses considerable force and intensity, with a mineral, citrusy, lemon blossom, orange peel component to its full-bodied richness. It reveals good acidity and power, all of which is harnessed and beautifully balanced. Look for this wine to open with another 12 months of cellaring, and drink well for 5-7 years. Pale greeny-gold color. Musky aromas of minerals, ginger and earth; suggestions of Burgundian funk. Very rich and chewy, with dusty flavors of orange peel and earth. Full, generous and impressively deep. The impression of powdered stone gives the finish a tactile quality.

About the producer

Kistler 1:1
Kistler

Kistler’s Chardonnays are some of the world’s most sought-after. This cult Californian producer crafts small volumes of exceptional, rich and generous, yet mineral and precise wines. With almost the entire production sold directly to their mailing list, the wines are also incredibly hard to find.
