76% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon. Quite expressive on the nose with lifted damson fruit and some spice. Creamy oak is to the fore but not excessive. Attractive, fruity palate, very dark fruit and quite a lot of tannin. FINE+RARE

The 2012 La Dame de Montrose has a very classy, well-defined nose with vigorous blackberry, wild strawberry and cedar scents bursting from the glass. The oak is neatly enmeshed. The palate is well-defined with a fresh saline entry (more so than its peers). Ripe and generous, perhaps it tries too hard on the finish and loses some of its precision, but this is a fine effort. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

Tasted blind. Not especially communicative on the nose; just a bit of cassis. Polished tannins and a little simple. A wine Pamela Vandyke Price would have described as ‘four square’. (JR)

Tasted blind. Big and bold with some sweetness. A bit chunky and austere on the end. There is some flesh here but there is also a hint of greenness. Solid. (JR)
