The 2000 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a wine that I have not met since 2010. I was not particularly enamoured then and now I find little reason to alter my view. It has a light and leafy bouquet that does not get to grips with this hallowed vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with light leafy red berry fruit, fine acidity but for a Clos de la Roche, it really should deliver more complexity and persistence. This was an era when the domaine could not quite deal with this Grand Cru and the wines rarely reached their full potential. This 2000 testifies to that. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.

Rousseau's 2000 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is quite successful in this vintage, and it's certainly still full of life, opening in the glass with a pretty bouquet of red cherry, strawberry, subtle mint, mustard seed and potpourri. On the palate, the wine is supple, polished and velvety, with decent concentration and depth, and suggestions of baked fruit on the palate. The Clos de la Roche is never Rousseau's most compelling grand cru, but it would be churlish to deny that this is excellent.

Pale rust red. Some real depth to this wine which has a vegy element and no obvious sweetness. Lots of tang and savour. And persistence. Very self-confident and fresher than most. Distinctly edgy. Appetising but not the most alluring. (JR)
