Score 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Sep 2006

High-toned, expressive aromas of citrus fruits, pear, flowers and clove. Sweet, fat and full but quite suave and not at all overripe. This has terrific stuffing for a 2004, especially considering the fact that these vines were recently replanted. Finishes firm and persistent, with lingering sweetness. Niellon prefers chardonnay vintages in which the vines suffer a bit, like 2004.

Oak spice dominates fruit on the nose. Intensely flavored, juicy and firm, with subtle flavors of stone fruits, spices and flowers. Excellent for young vines in a copious year (these vines were replanted in 1999), but not as long as Niellon's other crus. Niellon noted that he had done a rather strict spring pruning prior to my recent visit to control the level of the 2005 crop.
