There’s a lovely herbaceous edge to the nose here, with delicate florals and white-pepper spice, that make it feel quite pretty and dainty. The alcohol is beautifully balanced, and there’s a lovely purity and texture to the palate. This is supple and silken, with lovely core of plummy fruit, cut by a red berry freshness, while the finish has a mineral, crushed chalk edge.

91.6% Merlot, 8.4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very rich nose that’s hugely appealing. Lots of ripe fruit and a cassis note. A really very attractive drink. Perhaps the younger vintages – 2022 and 2023 – are just too young? Really rather rich, glorious and complete without the aggressive tannins of the left-bank wines. (JR)

Tasted blind. Black core with purplish rim. Fragrant with fresh dark fruit and a mineral/stony quality. A touch leafy on the palate yet with lots of freshness and very fine tannins. Juicy as well as structured. Long and elegant. (JH)

The 2020 Gazin has a very composed and harmonious bouquet. The oak is very well integrated and there's plenty of fruit— blackberry and wild strawberry infused with truffle and iron. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry and a tight, linear style that's just missing a bit of complexity toward the finish. Will it give more with continued bottle age? This bottle does not show as well as the previous one I tasted at the end of 2022. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
