The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has a cohesive nose with taut and fresh black cherries and raspberry fruit. It’s energetic and focused, with just a background scent of pencil shavings. There’s plenty of complexity here, a cut above some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied, with slightly chalky tannins, a high-toned mixture of red and blue fruit, gentle grip and a slightly oaky finish, but that will be subsumed with bottle age. Promising. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

A restrained yet quite pretty nose reflects notes of dark berry liqueur, earth, lavender and a discreet dollop of oak. There is very good density to the caressing and delicious medium-bodied flavors that exude event minerality on the youthfully austere, focused and notably firmer finale. This needs to add depth, but the underlying material appears to be present such that this could gradually occur. Note: from a .40 ha parcel of vines that average about 40 years of age

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru is much more closed on the nose compared to Tardy’s other cuvées, blackberry, crushed strawberry, dill, mint and light iris and incense aromas. The palate is structured and grippy, quite spicy in texture, good backbone here with a slightly heady finish. Give this time in bottle.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has greater intensity on the nose compared to the Champs Perrières, and the fruit profile is a notch darker. The palate is medium-bodied with a grippy, masculine entry. Broody and backward, this is a Nuits Saint-Georges that will benefit from cellaring. Very saline on the marine-tinged finish. Plenty of character and class here. One for the long term.
