The 201 Siran is similar to three of four previous bottles that I have encountered. Like many wines of this vintage, it has a very conservative bouquet with leather, woodland and tertiary scents that would benefit from more fruit, more joie-de-vivre . The palate is balanced but not exactly the most exciting recent Siran that I have tasted, a little dry and staid, not quite translating the mineral element that it showed when I had it at the property in February 2016. Not bad, but I cannot really see this going anywhere. Tasted at home from an ex-château bottle.

Tasted at the vertical held at the château, the 2011 Château Siran, a blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, has an open, quite generous, earthy and leather-scented bouquet that permeates through the red berry fruit that feels a little smudged against the 2010 Siran. The palate is medium-bodied with quite fine tannin on the entry and tangible mineralité. This is an appealing Margaux that punches just above my expectations and its persistence on the finish suggests that it has the substance to age. This is worth looking out for. Tasted February 2016.

Inky crimson. Refined, ripe cassis aroma, toasty. Grainy tannins but not dense or aggressive. Grainy but gentle. Lacks fruit flavour on the palate, giving it a minerally dry character overall. Hard finish. (JH)
