The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet that leans more toward black rather than red fruit. Well-defined and focused, hints of rose petal emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied and quite fruit-driven, with blackcurrant pastilles, blueberry and violet. Compact and quite structured toward the finish, this needs another couple of years. Not bad, but it needs a little more Pinoté to show through—I think it will with time. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet unfurls in the glass with aromas of red berries and plums mingled with notions of raw cocoa, licorice and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and refined, with fine, powdery tannins and a long, perfumed finish, it will reward some bottle age.
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru, which sees no new oak, is very delineated on the nose of intense blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, demonstrating fine mineralité at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy on the entry and offering a mixture of red and black fruit laced with truffle and white pepper notes; very cohesive. This feels long and tender in the mouth. Excellent.
