Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Austere, just not enough fruit. More 2021 than St-Estèphe. Stringy finish. (JR)

Earthy tobacco, darker currants, plum, graphite, and sappy floral/herbal notes emerge from the 2021 Château Le Boscq, a rich, medium-bodied, nicely concentrated Saint-Estèphe that has ripe, polished tannins and a fleshy, full, layered mouthfeel. It's a touch rustic aromatically but is rock-solid on the palate.

The 2021 Le Boscq is the first vintage under ownership of Dourthe (before, it was a long-term fermage ). It reveals attractive scents of blackberry, raspberry coulis , black pepper and cedar, with just a touch of mint in the background. Medium-bodied, this has a well-balanced palate with a fleshy entry, while a dash of cracked black pepper mixed with pencil shavings defines the finish. Give this three to four years in bottle—this is a promising Saint-Estèphe.

The 2021 Le Boscq is quite delicate in this vintage, yet it conveys plenty of Saint-Estèphe character. Crushed rose petal, mint, blood orange, spice, dried leaves and earthy tones are all laced together. The 2021 is a quiet, understated wine, but its balance is impeccable. Floral notes reappear on the finish.
