The Lalande-de-Pomerol estate of Jean-Philippe Janoueix, also the owner of La Croix St.-Georges and La Confession, Chambrun is normally a 600-case, nearly 100% Merlot (a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc may be added to the blend) cuvee. Malolactic occurs in special cigar-shaped barrels, and the wine is aged on its lees. Chambrun’s winemaking consultant is Michel Rolland. The surprisingly big, exuberant 2003, while not yet graceful, is very expressive. The bouquet of white chocolate, blackberries, cherries, and spicy oak is followed by broad, sweet flavors. With additional bottle age, the ragged tannins should become integrated. This full-bodied, ruggedly constructed wine should age nicely for a decade.
