The spectacular 2001 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes continues to prove that Michel Tardieu has some serious sources for purchasing finished wine from Vacqueyras. A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, it exhibits an inky/purple color as well as a rich perfume of blackberry liqueur, melted licorice, and asphalt. Full-bodied and layered, with outstanding upside potential, this enormously endowed Vacqueyras should be cellared for 4-5 years, and enjoyed over the following 10-15. It is a brilliant achievement! Bright ruby-red. Very ripe but not overripe on the nose, with notes of blackberry, violet and bitter chocolate. High-pitched, intense and gripping in the mouth, with vibrant black fruit, violet and bitter chocolate flavors and firm, harmonious acidity. Finishes solidly tannic, lively and long. A very young, primary wine with terrific fruit.
Dark, saturated ruby-red. Slightly medicinal aromas of dark chocolate, menthol, licorice and roasted herbs. Fat, sweet, silky and lush, with lovely depth of blackberry and licorice flavor. Finishes quite long, with dusty tannins and a repeating note of licorice. The 2000 version is even more concentrated, says Tardieu, but it's also more tannic and rigid.
