Denis Durantou opened a magnum of the 1997 l’Eglise-Clinet and despite format and provenance, it is clearly always going to be eclipsed by the 1998. It has an attractive bouquet with scents of kirsch and wild strawberry, and hints of black truffle developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a light chassis for this cru, quite compare and a little pinched towards the finish. It is a laid back, easy-going l’Eglise-Clinet to drink over the next few years.

The Château l'Eglise-Clinet 1997, served from an ex-château magnum, is certainly more fruit-driven and backward than many bottles that I have tasted over the years. It does not have a complex bouquet, but it doles out attractive kirsch, wild strawberry and truffle notes like there is no tomorrow. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin and it is here that the limitations of the vintage are felt. It feels light and for this mighty Pomerol, just a little ephemeral for me. It has an easy-drinking style that is pleasant, but it's really just warming up for the 1998. Tasted March 2015.
In bottle. Past it. Lost its youthful freshness. Sweet but a bit too dried out and dusty. (JR)

Ch. l'Eglise-Clinet is one of the most unassuming wine estates in Bordeaux. You'd probably drive past it if you didn't have prior knowledge of its vinous output. There's no ostentatious gateway nor sweeping gravel drive.
