The 1993 Montrachet Grand Cru has a deep straw color with green tints. The bouquet is very attractive with engaging scents of orange blossom, quince and yellow flowers, fully mature but as fresh as a daisy. The palate is likewise mature with a fine bead of acidity, a touch of bitter lemon and orange pith, providing both the body and density you expect from such a Grand Cru. Unlike the 1989 tasted the previous day, this maintains its freshness in the glass, even if it did not manifest into something mightily profound (apart from a hint of menthol on the nose). It has an elegance and poise that I admire and it should give another 10 to 15 years of drinking fulfillment. Tasted at Carré des Feuillants restaurant in Paris.

Quite aromatically evolved and forward with strong oak toast aromas framing the beginning of beautifully complex secondary fruit notes and big, rich, dramatic, deep, full-bodied, remarkably powerful flavors underpinned by racy acidity and displaying fine length if perhaps not quite the exquisite balance of the best of this range. Still, this is undoubtedly a fine effort and one that is close to peaking. Allen Meadows-burghound 01/04/03
