The 2005 Series C is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 6% Malbec and 6% Cabernet Franc aged for 18 months in French oak. This has the most composed and complex nose thus far (after tasting the 2003 and 2004) with well-defined blackberry, cedar and hints of crème de cassis, neatly embracing Old World and New World. The palate is beautifully balanced with very well judged acidity. This is very refined and focused with subtle dark chocolate/cocoa notes lining the velvety finish that appears to become spicier, more “spiky” with continued time in the glass. This has matured with grace.

(66% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot and 6% each cab franc and malbec) Bright ruby-red. Claret-like aromas of plum, cassis, mocha, tobacco, spices and cedary oak. Rich, broad and fairly dry, with generous but subtle flavors of currant, tobacco, graphite, tar and sweet spices. Finishes with serious, building tannins that call for a couple years of patience.

Based in Paarl, Vilafonté was created by two leading Californian consultants, Zelma Long and Dr Phil Freese, with South African native Mike Ratcliffe. Today its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends are some of the country’s most respected – and highest rated.
