The 1984 Shiraz Hill of Grace (from a mild vintage) still shows an attractive mix of underpowered sweet fruit with red currants and forest fruits lifted by a generous serving of dried herbs and cedar. However, it does not fully deliver on the palate, with flavors in retreat behind a nervy acidity. Drink up now.

Despite Henschke rating this as an ‘exceptional vintage’ this wine – at least the bottle I tasted – is not looking all that exceptional now: atypically translucent colour and exotic aromas – not so much red fruit as almost tropical fruit (botrytis?) – with a sawdusty edge to the tannins and a slightly briny, sarsaparilla finish. Medium to deep brown colored with a hint of brick, the 1984 Hill of Grace shows some cloudiness in the glass. With quite a funky nose revealing notes of old chesterfields, tobacco and incense, it is medium-bodied, but a little tough and tart with somewhat astringent tannins. It has peaked. Lots of rain. (Great for botrytised Riesling.) Not especially concentrated ruby colour. Rather sumptuous rose-petal aromas. Sweet start and very round and alluring. Not the freshest fruit but very flattering. Tannins just a little dry on the finish. Dusty end. (JR)
