Bright medium ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of dark plum and mocha. Rich and pliant but not overly sweet, with excellent concentration and sexy soil tones to the flavors of black raspberry, plum, minerals, toffee, mocha and chocolate. This nicely saline wine is more classic and shapely, not to mention less exotic, than the 2009 version.

Yields were absurdly low at 20 hectoliters per hectare, and the final blend of 95% Merlot and the rest small dosages of Cabernet Franc and Malbec came in at 14.5% natural alcohol. Opaque blue/purple, the unmistakable notes of wet rock, blueberry liqueur, spring flower garden, crushed chalk and earth are all present in this full-bodied, seriously endowed, over-achieving Fronsac, It is built for the long haul, so consumers would be well-advised to forget it for several years and drink it over the following 10-15, possibly even 20. Stephane Derenoncourt is the consultant for this wine, which has really come on over the last half dozen years and is now routinely one of the great wines of this somewhat under-the-radar appellation.
Tobacco notes and very concentrated colour. Tough and dry on the palate. Very stereotypically ‘masculine’. Very chewy. Drying tannins on the finish. (JR)
