The 2008 Riesling is quite reserved on the nose with touches of crushed stone, a touch of morning dew. Reserved at the moment. It has very good fruit intensity on the palate, very good acidity, touches of peach and honeysuckle with a tight, well-defined finish. Another pretty Central Otago Riesling. I met proprietor Nigel Greening in London back in 2008 for a first peek at his new releases just before he moved permanently to New Zealand and then re-tasted some of the wines in Central Otago during the Pinot Noir Celebration and again at regional tastings. As expected, winemaker Blair Walter continues to produce a very Burgundian style of Pinot Noir that prioritizes elegance and finesse over power and concentration. Although their Pinot Noirs hog the limelight (deservedly so), their excellent Chardonnay and Rieslings should not be ignored. Importer: Wilson Daniels Ltd., St. Helena, CA; tel. Based on grapes grown in the Elms vineyard. RS 55 g/l, pH 2.9 . There's quite a bit of residual sugar in this and I can't help feeling the winery team's heart isn't really in this wine. Big and a little brutal but no specious florality. Off dry and well balanced if a little chewy. (JR)
