A sleeper of the vintage, this well-made Medoc reveals lots of cedar, tobacco leaf and black currant characteristics, silky tannin, medium to full body and attractive succulence and flesh. Year in and year out, d’Escurac is a major over-achiever and the 2009 is no exception. Drink it over the next decade.

50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cherries and a slight mocha note. Dense and savoury on the palate. Firm grip but fully ripe tannins. Needs a good bit of time. (JH)

Dark purple. Very ripe and well balanced on the nose, even if not desperately distinctive. Sweet, mild start. Then some chocolate and exaggerated oak on the finish. A little heavy and sweet for a Médoc. (JR)
