This reliable cru bourgeois estate has dropped the "La" from its name, no doubt because of complaints from the similarly-named, world-renowned first-growth Pauillac. One of the most reliable wines in its class over the last two decades, the 1996 is a dark purple-colored wine with powerful, ripe, earthy, blackcurrant aromas. Dense, with fine sweetness on the attack, a high tannin level, medium body, and good purity, it should keep for 10-15 years, providing classy, slightly austere, but delicious drinking. If the wine fleshes out in the bottle, it will deserve a higher rating.
