The 1988 Les Ormes de Pez has a fragrant, savory, meaty bouquet with touches of truffle, rustic and quite Right Bank in style. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin. It is rather austere as you would expect from a Saint Estèphe and missing a little body towards the masculine, tobacco-tinged finish. Yet there is a modicum of freshness after 30-years but even so, I would advise consuming this in the near future. Tasted at the château.

The 1988 is, curiously, similar to the 1989, but it does not have quite the weight or jammy fruit of the 1989. For the vintage, it is surprisingly forward and should drink well for up to a decade. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 11/90.

About the producer
The Cazes family – owners of Lynch-Bages – added this Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois estate to their portfolio in 1940, just one year after they purchased Lynch-Bages. The property comprises 32 hectares of vines in the north of the appellation, close to the village of Pez.
