The 1996 Les Ormes de Pez seems to have mellowed since the last time that I tasted it: mulberry and a touch of dried fig, a touch of allspice coming through with time. The palate is fully mature with fine tannin, quite saline and almost brine-like, tapering in slightly towards the finish. It is a little "serious" like some 1996s tend to be, a touch of Sichuan pepper on the finish. I would drink this sooner rather than later. Tasted July 2016.
Lively intense crimson. Neat, fully evolved nose with some chewiness on the finish still. There is fruit but no excess of it. Vigorous, slightly minty. A good drink. (JR)
Dark-colored, with good berry and mint aromas and hints of fresh tea leaves. Full-bodied and chewy, with serious concentration of ripe tannins and a medium finish. Needs but a bit more fruit intensity to be outstanding. Best after 2001. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 1999.
About the producer
The Cazes family – owners of Lynch-Bages – added this Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois estate to their portfolio in 1940, just one year after they purchased Lynch-Bages. The property comprises 32 hectares of vines in the north of the appellation, close to the village of Pez.
