I rarely entertain elevated expectations for white Burgundies from this vintage, but Lafon's 2003 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières surprised me. Offering up aromas of sweet orchard fruit, peach, green pineapple, subtle honeycomb and hazelnuts, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and textural, with an impressively vibrant core of fruit, muscular structure and a long, resonant finish. Guesses around the table when I served this blind included 1995 and 2005, but no one opted for 2003.

Orange, oatmeal and hazelnut. Round on the attack, then fat and soft in the middle, with lovely sweet fruit. Tightens up a bit on the back end, finishing with surprising grip.
(the domain's young and older vines were assembled at the outset) Aromatic nose of pineapple, gingerbread and spicy oak. Creamy and wonderfully sweet; a large-scaled, rather exotic wine that's saved by its sheer sappiness. Very rich, very dry and impressively long. Very Genevrieres.
Cookie dough, exquisitely ripened pears, toast, and spiced apples can be found in the nose of the plump 2003 Meursault Genevrieres (white).Medium-bodied, silky-textured, and fruit-forward, this seductive wine has everything going for it except the persistence in the finish displayed by Lafon’s other 2003s.
