Score 87-89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2006

(the blend is 55% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot and 2% petit verdot) Good ruby-red. Black fruits, spices and a whiff of herbs on the nose. Tasted following Les Pagodes, the second wine of Cos d'Estournel, this is more penetrating and less supple, with more rustic but St. Estephe-typical notes of tobacco leaf, menthol and earth. Solidly built.

Bright crimson. A little muted on the nose. Round and voluptuous on the front palate then fine sandy tannins on the finish. This should be a very brisk, good-value wine with a little note of St-Estèphe asperity. Still very youthful and not a come-on at present. (JR)
