Score 88/100 · Drink 2015-2023, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Jan 2015

Helmut learned in this deep and pebbly vineyard which is not rich and has an excellent drainage. Less cool than the Oberhausen vineyards so it is a earlier site with 3 or 4 days in advance in flowering as well as harvesting. The acidity is slightly less and the wines tend to be more warm and mellow whereas in Oberhausen they are more pure, precise and sharp. The 2013 Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Trocken offers yellow fruit aromas of ripe honeydew melon and nectarines which lead to a rich and juicy palate with a sharp and searing mineral acidity. This is a mouthful of wine, medium-bodied and piquant, very stimulating and already easy yet not unambitious to drink.

A little muted on the nose. Floral but somehow not quite as convincing as some. A little spindly. Very dry indeed! (JR)

Cask sample. The Kahlenberg does offer a little citrus fruit on the nose, but is quite taut and almost chewy on the palate. Peel and pith notes accompany the delicate grapefruit flavour. Even a tad astringent on the mouth-feel, the Kahlenberg may need a few months to settle down. (MS)
