Score 84/100 · Drink 2016-2021, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2016

The 2013 Maucaillou has a deep color and the aromatics here are very appealing: blackberry and redcurrant fruit, nicely defined with a mineral touch. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin and slightly lower acidity than its peers. It loses some definition towards the finish that has a tinny reduction, but otherwise it represents an acceptable if not particularly memorable contribution to the vintage.

Smoky and meaty on the nose with a medicinal, iodine hint. Very fine tannin that gives grip without intrusion and lovely pure fruit through to the finish. A very worthy effort! (RH)

Liquorice, menthol, black cherry. Very drying, protuberant tannins. Pleasant fruit character, but the structure doesn’t frame the flavour so well. (RH)
