The 2010 Il Blu is 50% Sangiovese with some Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in oak for up to 20 months. This gorgeous wine shows incredible seamlessness with smooth aromas of cherry and blackberry that fold neatly into savory tones of spice and leather. The quality of the winemaking is impeccable. Il Blu is especially profound in the mouth, where it shows supple tannins and long persistency. It boasts integrated acidity and well-managed tannins. The 2010 vintage shows youthful, nervous energy that bodes well for its future evolution.

It's interesting to taste the 2010 Il Blu. While virtually all of Tuscany's internationally-styled wines are much more elegant and restrained today than they were in the mid-1990s (when this style was at its peak of fashion) the 2010 Il Blu tastes like a throwback to that era. A mass of super-ripe, dark blue/black fruit and new French oak hits the palate in a full-bodied, voluptuous wine. Readers will find no subtlety or nuance here, but rather a wine that makes its case with sheer power. Sadly, this is one of the most disappointing Il Blus I can remember tasting, both relative to the best years and a vintage that produced so many true rockstar wines.
