The deepest in color, the ruby 2010 Rosso Di Montalcino displays a fantastic aromatic profile, with aromas of ripe cherries, cocoa powder, and crushed stones. It’s a stunning Rosso with an outstanding structure that shows no signs of slowing, with beautiful notes of pure tea leaves, crushed stones, and dried strawberries on the finish. It feels remarkably young and is just going to keep going for another 10 or more years, but I like where it is now. The lesson here is to start aging your Poggio di Sotto Rossos where you can.

The 2010 Rosso di Montalcino is pretty, layered and subtle. Sweet red cherries, flowers, mint and raspberries are all layered together in this finely sculpted, delineated wine. Feminine, gracious and beautifully balanced, the 2010 stands out for its balance and harmony. Overall, the 2010 is quite soft and accessible, both for the year and also relative to prior vintages of comparable quality.

Poggio di Sotto is understandably going through a bit of a transition. Former proprietor Piero Palmucci sold the property to Claudio Tipa of Grattamacco in 2011. That was followed by the passing of long-time winemaker Giulio Gambelli in late 2012. It will take some time for those two events to sort themselves out. Poggio di Sotto isn’t a winery – it’s an icon. Hopefully the new team will be able to equal and eventually surpass the wines made here by Gambelli, but it will require the same type of rigorous approach instilled by Palmucci, one of the most strong-willed and tenacious people I have ever met. Piero Palmucci seemed to rule with fear, and while I am not sure that is always so pleasant, the results were beyond reproach. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel. (510) 524-1524
