Admits there may be some brett (‘old-fashioned Rhône style which I really love’). Lacks completely vibrant fruit. Chunky. (JR)

Seriously impressive, the 2005 Giaconda Shiraz Warner Vineyard - 98% Shiraz and 2% Roussanne that spent 20 months in barrel - sports wild, exotic aromatics of sour cherry, ground pepper, bay leaf, and wild herbs. Certainly not straight-forward nor fruit centric, the wine is gorgeous on the palate with an energetic, vibrant texture, racy acidity, and a structured, long finish that yields additional smoky, meaty notes. The aromatic profile is not unlike that of a Washington State Syrah from the Stones. This beauty should easily continue to shine for another 5-8+ years, and while certainly not cheap, is worth seeking out.

Dark purple. Explosively perfumed nose displays spicy red and dark berries, Asian spices, graphite and tobacco, along with a sexy floral overlay. Lush but focused, with juicy black raspberry and cassis flavors complicated by smoky bacon and candied violet. Textbook syrah, delivering a striking blend of fruit, animal and earth qualities and excellent finishing clarity. I'd hold onto mine for at least another five years.

The 2005 Shiraz “Warner Vineyard” spent 22 months in French oak, 60% new. Opaque purple-colored, it reveals an enticing perfume of pain grille, pepper, Asian spices, smoked meat, bacon, and blueberry. On the palate it is firm and slightly lean with good flavors and a long, pure finish. Drink it over the next 8-10 years. Giaconda, founded by Rick Kinzbrunner, released its first wines in 1987. The winery and vineyards are located in Beechworth in northeastern Victoria. Importer: Negociants USA, Napa, CA; www.giaconda.com.au
