Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets 2011 from Vincent Morey has a more generous but less complex nose than Paul Pillot’s with pear drop and light peachy notes that don’t quite get a handle on the minerality of Caillerets. The palate is medium-bodied and nicely balanced, a pleasant what you might term “punters’ Cailleret." There is nothing bad here at all, but it lacks the pedigree of some of its peers.

Good yellow-straw color. Reticent aromas of pear, green apple and wet stone. Fat and chewy in the mouth, showing a saline quality but little verve or sweetness. Finishes with a bitter edge. Where's the fruit?
Bright green-tinged yellow. Soil-driven aromas of crushed stone, mocha, white flowers and spices, complicated by notes of butter and honey. The sweet yellow peach flavor features a suggestion of dried-fruit character. Finishes very ripe, with a slight burn that may be a result of the chaptalization.
