Serralunga d’Alba. Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. Minerally, savoury fruit nose and wonderful, supple, elegant palate with lots of grainy tannins interwoven with the fruit. Fine, long and tactile. (WS)

The 2011 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia does not live up to the high standards of years past. This expression of Nebbiolo shows a thin, lightweight mouthfeel and medium persistence. On the bouquet, you get a steady delivery of red fruit, cherry, blackberry and spice. Those mineral characteristics of crushed stone or flint are also very prominent. Spicy tones of white pepper and dried garden herb distinguish the finish.

Just mid ruby with broad, orange-tinged rim. Soft yet backward nose with hints of baking spice. Supple, ripe palate but reluctant to show proper fruit at this stage. Really slumbering and almost a little austere in spite of its brooding ripeness This needs much more time. (WS)

Lavender, mint, sage, smoke, tobacco and plums are all laced together in the 2011 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca'Mia. As always, the Ca'Mia is a decidedly vertical Barolo built on a spine of persistent tannin, but in 2011 there is a little bit of added polish that serves to soften the contours. Tucked off the main road, Brea remains one of the least well-known vineyards in Serralunga. The 2011 is a great wine to start exploring some of the nuances of this site. A huge finish that brings together power and voluptuousness captures the pure radiance of the year.
