70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot. Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Stonily aromatic – almost smells like a St-Estèphe. Then some lively dancing fruit on the palate. Rather distinctive – as though following a different, more refreshing recipe than the rest. New wave? (JR)

The 2014 Haut-Bages-Libéral has a lifted bouquet, quite floral in style with black cherries and a touch of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit tinged with graphite, moderate length with a slightly blunt finish. To be honest, it is not my favourite Haut-Bages Libéral in recent years. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Again, rather stewed fruit on the nose. Lots to chew on, with tannins and greenness – a bit intrusive. (JR)

The 2014 Chateau Haut-Bages Libéral offers a very classic, old-school style in its red and black fruits, lead pencil shavings, cedar wood and leafy herbs/underbrush aromas and flavors. It the same style as the 2015, with perhaps just a touch more firmness in its tannin, this medium-bodied, fresh, classic Claret needs 3-4 years and consumed over the following decade. The tannin will need to be watch here as they could dry out as this evolves.
