(the rest of the Combe d'Orveau was declassified into the village Chambolle in 2013; vinified with 100% whole clusters): Healthy deep red. Wonderful whole-cluster complexity and perfume to the aromas of raspberry, spices and white pepper. Like liquid silk on entry, then wonderfully dense and sweet in the middle, showing buns of steel. The powerful, rising finish shows a whiplash of red fruit, mineral and spice flavors and terrific grip and energy. This reminded me of a little Musigny--and not too little at that.

The 2013 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Combes d'Orveau Cuvée Ultra includes 100% pédicelles rather than whole bunch. Like the Chambertin Clos-de-Beze, there is very fine transparency here: crystalline red fruit mingling with orange sorbet, pine and wet limestone scents that all gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, well-judged acidity, harmonious in the mouth with commendable density and grip toward the saline finish. Compact at the moment, this deserves 5 -6 years to fully unwind once in bottle.
