Score 87/100 · Drink 2016-2017, David Schildknecht, Vinous, May 2016

Ripe pear drizzled with lime and grapefruit juice dominates this generic bottling that as usual issues from Oberhausen’s Felsenberg and Kieselberg vineyards. A sense of almost decadently advanced ripeness is balanced without any awkwardness by the wine’s juicy fresh citricity, and the finish, while relatively simple and understated, is nicely sustained.

Mainly sourced from volcanic soils, Dönnhoff's 2014 Riesling Trocken offers a clear and slightly flinty-flavored fruit aroma of pineapples and grapefruit. The wine is light and delicate on the palate, juicy, mineral and very well balanced. The finish is piquant, grippy and very stimulating.

Fruit from two sites, one slate and one volcanic. RS 5 g/l. Mineral, almost a little peppery. Delicate but definite. Fine, sour freshness, tight and steely on the finish, very crisp. (JH)
