50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Bianco. ‘A cool spring with abundant rainfall was followed by moderate summer heat and warm autumn temperatures, allowing grapes to ripen gradually till harvest.’ Harvest 2–14 September: a late vintage at this estate – Sangiovese was picked 4 October onwards! Mid copper colour. Very intense pear-juice nose. Real concentration in the wine – long hang time. First time the blend included Pinot Gouges , which brought texture. (JR)

The 2013 Batàr is quite beautiful. Lemon oil, white flowers, almonds and a hint of orange peel are laced together in an effortless, gracious white endowed with real personality. This is the first vintage that includes a clone of Pinot Blanc sourced from Henri Gouges in Nuits St. Georges and that also seems to reflect a more polished, refined style. A revisited approach to pruning that allows yields to be naturally a bit higher than in the past and less new oak during aging seem to be paying off.
About the producer
Literally translating as “beautiful oak”, Querciabella was created in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni. A pioneer in Chianti, he started farming biodynamically and experimenting with both varieties and winemaking – one result of which was Camartina, the property’s flagship Super Tuscan.
