Medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, spices, leather and earth are a bit more rustic than they appeared to be from barrel in late 2015. Lower-pitched than the 2015 version but with good texture and richness to its plum and leather flavors. Finishes with a chocolatey nuance and substantial dusty tannins that come across as a bit dry today. I wanted more sweetness.

Bright red. Pure aromas of red fruits and spices. Energetic and firm, with a saline nuance adding interest to the pristine red fruit flavors. A classic village wine with a solid spine of acidity and tannins. (By the way, don't hesitate to snap up Lafarge's rich, ripe but elegantly styled Bourgogne Rouge if you happen to see a bottle. )

The 2014 Volnay Villages has a detailed bouquet with granite-tinged red berry fruit that, like many others, seems to have adopted a Pommard-like personality. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. The acidity is nicely judged, leading to a more masculine Volnay with a fine line of acidity and perhaps more aging potential than you would presuppose.

Lovely perfume – so silky and seductive! Great balance and freshness. Bone-dry finish – very appetising. (JR)
